Fairchild 225A Vintage Mono MC Phono Cartridge 225-A .. One of the Finest Mono Cartridges Ever Offered MUST SEE Fairchild 225A Vintage Mono MC Phono Cartridge Sherman Fairchild was one of the most significant inventors of the modern era and undoubtedly one of the greatest American entrepreneurs of all time. His contributions to society are so wide spread it would be hard to see an area of technology where he wasn’t an influence. Companies such as Fairchild Aircraft, Fairchild Stratos, Fairchild Hiller, Fairchild Industries, Fairchild Camera and Instrument, Fairchild Semiconductor, and Fairchild Recording, to name a few, were all leading innovators in their respective fields. Sherman Fairchild was also a co-founder of Pan American Airlines and American Airlines as well as Director of IBM, a company his father founded.. In the 1950’s one of Fairchild’s pet projects was Fairchild Audio, which was a spinoff of Fairchild Recording. Much of the technology developed by the professional recording division was sold to consumers in the audio division. Fairchild audio products were outstanding quality, yet most were in a price range the average consumer could not afford. Nevertheless, as he did in every other area of technology, Fairchild brought a new level of excellence to the Hi-Fi industry. Particularly in the field of phono cartridges he made some significant breakthroughs. The Fairchild 225-A was introduced in 1950 with an eight year production run. It was a hi-fi production model of the famed professional recording cartridges Fairchild was producing for years. This monaural moving-coil pick-up was one of the last great mono cartridges Fairchild produced, as all later production efforts went into the development of stereo cartridges. When originally released the Fairchild 225-A was a giant leap forth in cartridge design with an overall sound quality that was far better than anything else in the marketplace. It was unabashedly touted as the finest mono cartridge, and 60 years later it is a statement that is still hard to dispute. Its design and construction quality are of the utmost quality it features a premium grade 1-mil microgroove super polished diamond stylus specifically designed for LP play and a unique enamel coated, triple-gold-plated copper/silver/alloy wiring throughout, which undoubtedly contributes to its longevity. The 225-A was one of the first cartridges to eliminate hum and have no magnetic attraction to metal platters. Its compliance for lateral motion is very high, giving it amazing low frequency response even by today’s standards. It presents a wide range and very smooth response. Its higher compliance reflects in deeper and tighter bass with any given pickup arm, as well as its remarkable ability to track high-level low-frequency tones. When used with a quality transcription arm the sonic advantages of the 225a become even more apparent Nominal Impedance 200 Ohms Inductance 2 mh DC Resistance 195 ohms Output Approximately 5 millivolts for recorded velocity of 2.5 inches per second Frequency Response +/-2dB 20 to 20k HZ Weight 12 grams Stylus microgroove tip Radius: 0.001” diamond Recommended tracking force 6 grams Recommended load 5,000 ohms or greater Cartridge has been tested and it sounds great. Looking it over there are minor signs of use. The Fairchild lettering has a little ware. The stylus is very clean no obvious ware. This is a No Reserve Auction so it will go to the highest bidder.
